We want you to write for us! Whether you are young or old, female or male, newly arrived in Canada or deeply rooted here, we want to be inspired by your unique perspective. A few things we look for are: an original voice; an unexpected view; an unfamiliar perspective; humour; vivid details that show us rather than tell us; anecdotes that illuminate a wider theme. A successful First Person essay may be funny, surprising, touching or enlightening — or all of these. It may present a slice of life or a powerful experience that changed you in some way.
It helps if the situation has a contemporary edge, though this is not essential. Most important is that the writing be emotionally honest and the story be freshly and compellingly told. Send submissions to: modernlove nytimes. Please put the subject of your essay or a possible title in the email subject line. Please attach your essay as a Microsoft Word-compatible doc and paste the text into the body of the email. If your first submission is incomplete, please resubmit one complete entry; do not submit just the missing pieces in additional emails. No pseudonyms including the author , composite characters or invented situations may be used.
Whatever that experience is, it should offer insight into an ongoing and relevant cultural conversation for readers. Personal essays can deal with almost any topic; some to think about are money, family, food, religion, sexuality, relationships, disability, illness mental or physical , hormones, race, body image, drugs, travel. What did you learn from your experience? What should we learn? What does it illuminate about humans and the world we live in?
