Students diagnosed with COVID must wait longer to return to high school athletic competition under a new rule approved by the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association board of directors. Beginning Monday, the minimum time required to resume competing will be 15 days. For the last couple of months, athletes could return in as little as seven days. The additional time will add a layer of safety, as athletes coming back from a COVID diagnosis will now be required to gradually increase their physical activity for five days under the supervision of an athletic trainer before being cleared to compete again. Board chairman Bradley Layfield, principal at Sussex Central High School, said the new requirement is designed to guard against potential cardiac or pulmonary issues that could arise after students return to school following a coronavirus diagnosis. Previously, on the seventh day after testing positive or the onset of symptoms, if a student-athlete tested negative, they could return to school and resume competing immediately.
